What is an Angel Investor?
from: Debbie BoyntonJust like the name implies, an angel investor can be a business life saver and/or guardian.
If you plan to open your own business, you will need capital for your business start up expenses. Angel investors can supply that capital. They are one of the most popular financing options in business today.
An angel investor is a person who offers a cash investment in your business in the hopes of a high rate of return on their capital. They study your business model and possible profit margins and determine that you are worth the risk of investing their money.
When you start a new business it requires a lot of time, effort and especially money. You have done your homework. You have researched your market and have a written business plan and budget. You could try asking for a loan from the bank, but sometimes their interest rates are too high for a new business or they consider a new business too risky.
Enter the angel investor. They can often provide the capital for private businesses during the start up phase. They fill the gap between financing options provided by friends, family and venture capital firms.
Sometimes friends and family can help you finance the start up costs of supplies, research and other smaller costs. But we know the real money eater is the operating expenses. The angel investor can be your option to provide those funds. They look for new businesses either already in profit or very close to it and make a judgement if you are worth the investment of their capital.
Angel investors are a great source of capital if you want to expand an already profitable business. These type ventures can be very costly and extra capital is most times needed.
Angel investors are usually people that have vast business experience. They not only have capital to spend, but business advice and knowledge to give you as well. They want to see you succeed and sometimes want an active role in your company's management decisions, like a business partner. You should discuss what part the angel investor is to play in your business and what, other than money, he will provide.
Some angel investors like to be more involved than others. Keep this in mind as you seek your angel investor so you can find a good fit for your business, style, and personality.
