Angel Investing - A Good Choice

from: Lynn Kenilworth

An angel investor is a successful business owner or executive willing to provide an aspiring entrepreneur the capital needed to launch a new business. Angel investing is a step above venture capitalism by three important distinctions: Where funding comes from, who controls the funding, and why the funding is given.

A new business requires money from a reliable, trustworthy source. Most business owners feel so fortunate to receive money from a lender that they do not think about where the money comes from. They do not realize that when they do business with venture capitalists they are spending money of other individuals. The venture capitalist can handle money loosely, take large gambles with the invested money, and force business owners to conform to a certain set of standards or risk losing all their funding. The money spent by a venture capitalist is not his own, so the risk of careless spending is much higher. An angel investor provides direct funding from his or her own pocket. The angel investor is taking a risk and playing for much higher stakes. If your company is worth the risk, the angel will give you funding in exchange for a few securities.

Along with providing funding from his or her pocket, the angel investor deals directly with you on financial matters. In venture capitalism you must work with a large company. The angel investor is a strong financial and management advisor. You will learn valuable business skills while working one-on-one with an experienced business executive.

Angel investing's method of direct funding and advising also has a financial benefit to the aspiring business owner because most angel investors require a smaller return than venture capitalists. Angel investors seek out businesses to sponsor for reasons other than high profits. Some investors seek companies with the potential to change the world. Other investors see themselves years ago, struggling for the money to start their own business. Some enjoy watching the businesses of a certain demographics grow while adding jobs and wealth to communities. Whatever the reasons for angel investing, the investor is a heavenly choice.

Angel investing is a one-on-one financial relationship between a business owner and investor. This heavenly choice consists of direct funding, direct management of funds, and an investor who really cares of about the future of the business.
